Yesterday, a Houston apartment won best "tiny" after four rounds of voting on the popular website Apartment Therapy. The 450-square-foot entry by Chris Nguyen also took the United States grand prize out of 165 featured places and 500 submissions. What did Nguyen say inspired his design? "The opposite of everything in Texas."

The tech-savvy layout uses a $50 Ikea roller blind as both a room separator and two-sided projection screen.

My favorite detail is the copy of Cite (77) sitting atop the coffee table. Though partially obscured by headphones and an iPod, the cover photo of the Jack Tar Motor Hotel pool terrace fits in with the decor that "lean[s] towards mid-century modern..." but draws from "anything well-designed, new or old."

Nguyen is 27 years old and studied advertising art direction at University of Texas Austin. "I am a graphic designer by trade," he explains, "but I have been getting a few inquiries from people about small interior design projects even prior to the win. The positive reception of my work is definitely acting as an impetus to exploring what I can do in other facets of design." He works for Judson Design and his personal website is Creative in Theory. More details about the apartment are available at the original post from last year.

The apartment is located in Westmoreland Place, a neighborhood generally considered part of Montrose.
