Rice Design Alliance is thrilled to announce its next Traveling Program destination for summer 2022 is a trip to Canada curated by Rice Architecture faculty Stephen Fox and Carlos Jiménez. The trip includes stops in Toronto and Montreal to experience the country’s rich architectural history with local experts and architects. We’ll begin the tour in Toronto, Canada’s largest city, which boasts a world-class mix of both heritage and modern architecture designed by local and internationally acclaimed architects, including Mies Van der Rohe, Fumihiko Maki, Frank Gehry, Daniel Libeskind, and Viljo Revell. From city landmarks to hidden gems, we will learn the stories behind the buildings, landscapes, and art that make Toronto a design destination. Highlights of our stops include Pritzer Architecture Prize winning architect Fumihiko Maki’s Aga Khan Museum (2014) and Frank Gehry’s extension for the Art Gallery of Ontario (2008), as well as such notable examples of mid-1960’s architecture, like Viejo Revell’s Toronto City Hall. Our tour of Toronto also includes a private tour of Point William’s house and grounds with Brigitte Shim, architect and partner of Shim-Sutclliffe (winners of the 2021 Canadian Gold Medal).

For the second half of our trip, we travel to Montreal, a city that fuses old world European charm with a new world contemporary design scene. The blend of Canadian and French cultures can be seen throughout the city’s exciting design, art, and culinary scene.

We will have a full itinerary visiting notable places, including Buckminster Fuller’s Biosphere (1967) and Moshe Safdie’s Habitat 67 (1967), the cobble-stoned neighborhoods of Vieux-Montréal, and the city’s lush city parks. Travelers will also enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, one of the world’s most important museums and research institutions dedicated to modern architecture.

While days will be populated with exclusive tours, six evenings will be left free for your own exploration of our destination cities. See details below on how to join us and other design enthusiasts for this exclusive-access program.
