Traveling Program, Switzerland 2019.

For over 20 years, Rice Design Alliance has offered a rich architecture and design traveling program, as well as tours of some of Houston’s most interesting architectural examples.

Our national and international Traveling Program is amongst the top in the country to lead exclusive design and architecture-focused trips. Under the expert guidance of Rice Architecture faculty, architects, curators, and architectural historians from around the world, we offer two yearly destinations to our members with unprecedented access to both the hidden spaces and most iconic buildings in some of the world’s most design-forward cities. Studio visits with local designers and architecture firms and private visits with key stakeholders in each city, provide the design-curious with a fun and profound understanding of the cultural scene of each of the cities we visit.

Our travels have taken us all over the globe looking at cities from the lens of architecture and design, from Pittsburgh to Portugal, from Savannah to Spain, from Boston to Berlin, Helsinki, Chicago, Buenos Aires, Marfa, Japan or Detroit.

Our Houston architecture and hard hat tours have introduced Houstonians to residential, closed to the public, and under construction spaces across town over the past twenty years.

2021 Architecture Tour

For our 2021 Architecture Tour, RDA is looking UPWARDS and highlighting examples of urban density in Houston’s housing stock. This year’s residences will be featured in a special virtual program, June 5 through June 19, that explores our city’s gradual transition towards urban densification and some of the different examples of housing types that exist in Houston. The virtual tour locations all champion the denser urban fabric that our city needs as we face population growth and increasing climate challenges.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Rice Design Alliance is thrilled to announce its next Traveling Program destination for summer 2021 is a trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico, June 17 - June 21, curated by Rice Architecture faculty Stephen Fox and Carlos Jiménez.  Over five days and four nights, Fox and Jiménez will guide us through the architectural and cultural gems of the high-desert city that distinguish it as a world-class destination. Trip highlights include tours of private homes and visits to some of Santa Fe’s most venerable art institutions: SITE Santa Fe, the Lannan Foundation, and the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, as well as the artist’s historic home and studio in nearby Abiquiú.
