Andrew Colopy, Rice Architecture assistant professor and partner and creative director for Cobalt Office, presents the Noon Talk “Technics without Standards” at 12:00 p.m. in Farish Gallery at Anderson Hall, Rice University, as part of the Spring 2020 Lecture Series.

Andrew Colopy is partner of Cobalt Office and assistant professor and co-director of Construct at Rice University. Combining research, teaching, and practice, his work examines the interrelationship of the building envelope, material, and information technology in the theory and practice of architecture.

Colopy has led Cobalt Office to realize a number of experimental public projects—The Luminary, Public Media Commons, Riverlands Avian Observatory, and Sheldon Plaza—and his practice is currently developing two houses and a large-scale micro-housing project.

As co-director of Construct, Colopy spearheads the program’s research on accessory dwellings (ADUs). Having recently curated Six Projects on Accessory Dwelling, the program will soon realize a net-positive ADU as part of Rice’s Energy and Environment Initiative.

Colopy’s creative works and writing have contributed to numerous books, including OfficeUS AgendaOffice US AtlasMaterial Strategies in Digital FabricationPrototyping for ArchitectsTotalizationHome DeliveryThe Design Build Studio, and Fieldwork: Design-Build (forthcoming), and have appeared in PraxisArchitect, Texas Architect, and Architectural Record, among others.

His work has twice been exhibited at both MoMA and the Venice Biennale. He is a MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program finalist, and has been recognized with ACSA, ASLA, AIA St. Louis, AIA Houston, and TxA design awards.

Previously, he was Visiting Assistant Professor at Washington University in St. Louis, where he received the school’s Outstanding Teaching Award. He is a former Fellow at Van Alen Institute, contributing editor of the journal, Praxis, and was Senior Designer at Diller Scofidio + Renfro where he played a leading role on Lincoln Center, the Berkeley Art Museum and the Museum of Image and Sound in Brazil.

Colopy is a licensed architect. He holds a B.S. in Architecture, summa cum laude, from The Ohio State University, and a Master of Architecture and the AIA Henry Adams Certificate from Columbia University.

The Spring 2020 Lecture Series is made possible through the generous support of the Betty R. and George F. Pierce Jr., FAIA, Fund.
