Rice Design Alliance 2014 Civic Forum: WALK HOUSTON

Like many cities across the United States, Houston is challenged to develop strategies to rein in the problems associated with sprawling growth. This two-part civic forum will address the problems, strategies, and aspirations Houston has as it continues to reshape its built environment to increase walkability, accessibility, and greater overall mobility.

Wednesday, August 20

Discussion will focus around the topics of development, public health, social impact, economic opportunity, and ecological considerations in relation to the role of walkable communities.

  • Bakeyah Nelson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Exercise and Health Sciences, Department of Clinical Health and Applied Sciences, UH-Clearlake
  • Susan Rogers, Assistant Professor and Director, Community Design Resource Center, Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture at the University of Houston

Wednesday, August 27

Discussion will focus on the topics of transportation/mobility, development obstacles, cross-agency/public-private partnerships, and planning in relation to the implementation of design.
