CAMH will be hosting the series Design Now—Houston that will explore a wide-range of graphic design output in the city. Nearly every week, a new set of graphic designers and artists will give a variety of talks about their projects, influences, and ideas.
Amanda Hayes-Valentine is a principal of ph Design, is a design agency with a retail front located in Rice Village. The creative side specializes in corporate branding, advertising, and graphic design. The retail side features beautifully handcrafted paper goods as well as other unique home products and locally designed jewelry. Hayes-Valentine will be in conversation with Raj Mankad, editor of Cite Magazine, on the art of magazine creation.
Reto Geiser is an architect and scholar with a focus in modern architecture and the contemporary architectural and urban discourse. He is currently the Wortham Assistant Professor at the Rice School of Architecture. A founding principal of the collaborative design practice MG&Co., Geiser will speak on book design. He is developing spatial strategies, considering a range of scales from a book to a house, looking for intersections and overlaps between architecture, installation, textiles, and typography. For the design of Atlas of Novel Tectonics (Princeton Architectural Press, 2006), he was awarded in 2007 the “Golden Letter”by the AIGA, the highest distinction in book design.
