Thanks to more than 1,100 people who accepted our invitation to join us at the 23rd annual Rice Design Alliance Gala at the Hilton Americas Hotel. This year RDA honored Phoebe and Bobby Tudor and celebrated philanthropy on Saturday, November 14, at 7 pm.
Phoebe and Bobby Tudor have chaired many fundraising events for a variety of non-profits organizations and have given generously to Houston’s cultural life.
A substantial gift to Rice University helped fund the rehabilitation of Autry Court, now Tudor Fieldhouse. The refurbished facility benefits not only the basketball players but provides a much better experience for the fans as well. Bobby is co-chair of Rice’s Centennial Campaign which has a $1 billion fundraising strategy to launch Rice into its second century. The campaign will provide funds for new buildings and improved campus facilities.
Phoebe Tudor holds a Masters degree in historic preservation from Columbia University and is chair of the Julia Ideson Library Preservation Partners. She is leading the challenge to raise $32 million to expand and restore the historic building.
David Andrews, Fundraising chair, was in good spirits as his committee raised over $500,000 to fund RDA programs, despite the challenging economic times. Randall Walker, Bob Inaba, and Juliè Gauthier of Kirksey Architects were responsible for the colorful environment that added to the high-spirited mood. Rebekah Johnson assisted with providing floral arrangements to complement the red, orange, and yellow tablecloths sweeping through the ballroom. Brochsteins donated their services to fabricate the brightly lit bar that was the centerpiece of the ballroom.
Guests poured over the fabulous auction assembled by Shelby Holman and Kim Kaase. Austin James and Liz Anders curated the collection of work donated by Houston artists and galleries. Andrea and Bob Crawmer and the OFIS assisted the auction team by warehousing and delivering auction items to the hotel.
RDA president David Spaw welcomed the hushed crowd who later stood up and applauded the Tudors when introduced by Gala chairs David Harvey and Mikki Hebl. Exuberant cheers came from the mothers of both the honorees as well as a number of brothers, sisters, and children!
The Rice Design Alliance would like to thank the many contributors and volunteers who made this gala such a successful event. We invite you to review the evening’s program and the list of companies and individuals who contributed their resources and talent to support RDA and its 2010 programs and its journal Cite: The Architecture + Design Review of Houston.
